Conference on New York State History

The Conference on New York State History is an annual meeting of historians, librarians, archivists, educators, and community members who are interested in the history, people, and culture of New York State and who want to share information and ideas about historical research and programming. Each year the Conference brings together several hundred interested scholars and students at locations across the state of New York.

The New York State Historical Association is proud to sponsor the Conference along with the New York State Archives Partnership Trust, with the support of the New York Council for the Humanities.

In celebration of New York's Quadricentennial in 2009, the 30th annual Conference on New York State History will be held in Plattsburgh, New York.  Though the city of Plattsburgh was not officially founded until 1785, both French and English settlers had called the area home since the early seventeenth-century.  The area has a number of critical relationships to the 400 year history of New York State-from Samuel de Champlain's original exploration of the lake that now bears his name to intellectual explorations at its state university, from pivotal battles in the American Revolution and War of 1812 to a key role in United States Cold War policy.

The 2009 conference seeks to explore these topics and others related to the rich and diverse history that is to be celebrated throughout the year during New York's Quadricentennial.  The conference will feature a preview of a documentary film examining the myths and realities of Samuel de Champlain's "discovery" and exploration of the region and is soliciting papers expressly related to themes of the Quadricentennial celebration including innovation, inspiration, our relationship to our own history, and the meaning of place.
